Mr. Slinger Francisco, known to the world as “The Mighty Sparrow” or “Birdie” was born on July 9 1935, to a poor working class family in Grand Roy, Grenada. The family later migrated to Trinidad where he was first exposed to music through the choir in the Catholic school he attended. Sparrow at the tender age of 20, with his love for music, began his career and was soon dubbed the leading calypsonian of Trinidad due to his record breaking hit “Jean & Dinah”. He continued on the road to sucess by showcasing his talent, and love for Calypso music, over the following forty years. He won the Trinidad & Tobago Carnival Road March eight (8) times and the Calypso Monarch eleven (11) times and was officially crowned “The Calypso King of the World.”
The Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon. Tillman Thomas praised “The Mighty Sparrow” for his contribution to Caribbean, and world culture, in his message on the occassion of “Sparrow” 75th Birthday which stated that “very few artistes can boast of a career that has spanned more than five decades, covered multiple genres of music and art-forms, and includes performances on stages in every continent.” The Prime Minister further stated that he was in fact happy to be sharing “The Mighty Sparrow” with Trinidad & Tobago because the two nations have co-existed and shared much for as far back as is known.
The members of the Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association (GHTA) joins hands with the Grenadian public in congratulating Mr. Slinger Francisco for his excellent work and contribution to the Music Industry, and all that he has achieved and wish him a happy 75th birthday and many many more years at the top of his chosen profession.
